Nigel Dobbyn, John Ridgway, Tim Perkins and guests look at creating comics in the digital age, discussing such things as mobiles, web, animated and traditionally printed comics, what part young people play in this new market, and how more comics creators are moving from mainstream to self-published works. They will discuss working digitally with the addition of tools like Photoshop, Painter, CGI and 3D, and discuss possibilities for the future.

6th Nov. Screening, Fantasic Planet 18:30, £6.30/£5 Carriageworks René Laloux’s mesmerising psychedelic sci-fi allegory is a landmark of European animation. The film prefigures much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki in its blending of fantastical storytelling, beautiful artwork, political and social concerns. ‘Oms’ are human-like creatures, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called ‘Draags’. The story takes place on the Draags’ planet Ygam, where Terr manages to escape enslavement to organise an Om revolt. 6th Nov. Screening, Gandahar 18:30, £6.30/£5 Carriageworks René Laloux’s last haunting animation is adapted from a novel by Jean-Pierre Andrevon and was a huge hit in France. Taking in genetic experiments and the importance of organic farming, it resonates today more than ever. Life in the idyllic paradise of Gandahar seems peaceful until the Mirror Birds report that villagers have been turned to stone. Sylvain is appointed to investigate and uncovers a deformed underground race and an oversized motherbrain, both the result of botched genetic experiments.
